Let us put you at ease
Being new to heating with oil can seem overwhelming at first. We’re here to put your worries at ease, and inform you as to why heating with oil is the most comfortable and safe way to keep your family warm all winter long.
1. Will the tank “blow up”?
NO! Heating oil is safer than other heating methods because it is combustible, not flammable like gasoline and natural gas. This means it must be atomized (how liquids are misted out of a spray bottle) before it will ignite. If you were to drop a match into your tank the match would simply go out as if you dropped it in water. Find more safety information at Oilheat America
2. How much oil will I use?
This varies from house to house. The local average is 550 gallons per year for a house that does not use oil to heat their hot water and 750 for those that heat their tap water with oil. However, these are averages. Call us and we’ll be happy to help you better estimate!
3. What if I run out?
When your tank runs out of oil your burner will become air-locked. Once you receive your next oil delivery, a service tech will need to bleed the air out of your oil lines to prime your burner. Best practice is to order as soon as your tank gets to the 1/4 mark. Or, make it easy on yourself and set-up automatic deliveries. You’ll never have to check your gauge again!
4. Do I need to be home for a delivery?
No. Deliveries are made from outside of your house. We pull a hose to your fill pipe and pump oil into the tank. While filling, we listen to a whistle that comes from the vent pipe. As oil flows into the tank, air leaves through the vent pipe passing through a whistle near the top of the tank. Once the oil level reaches the whistle, the whistle sound ceases and we know the tank is full and stop fueling. This is how we prevent overflowing a tank.
